How to Use the Backpack

Overview

The backplace is a place to store text, images, movies, sounds, and URLs. Each participant has a backpack. The contents of your backpack are the raw materials for tours that you create.

There are several ways to get items into your backpack.

(1) You can upload image, movie, or sound files from your computer. (2) You can cut and paste text from a word processor or web page, or type text in directly. (3) You can take items from tours or other places in RiverWalk.

Note: at present, only methods (1) and (2) are available.

The following media formats are supported by the backpack:

Text: Plain text, HTML
Images: Any format commonly supported by web browsers (mainly JPEG and GIF).
Movies and sound: Formats commonly supported by web browsers (e.g., .mov, .aif, .wav)
*Note: Whether a video or sound clip can be viewed depends on a browser's version, plugins, and settings. Be aware that all participants may not be able to view or hear your clip.
Memo: Plain text, HTML
URL: Any web address beginning with "http://"

Entering Text

1) In the Backpack menu bar, click "text". 2) Enter the title, text, and source/reference. 3) Click "save".

Entering Images, Video, or Sound

Similar to entering text, except in the place to enter an "attachment," click the "browse" button and choose a file from your computer's disk to upload. Enter a caption or explanation in the text box.

Entering a URL

Similar to entering text, but in the "caption" area include a summary or comments about the website. Make sure to include "http://" at the beginning of the URL.

Displaying and Editing Backpack Items

Under the Backpack menu bar will be a list of items in your backpack. If you click on the title of one, it will be displayed, and you will have the option to edit or delete it.

Images, movies, and sounds also have an "upload" button on the display screen. If you wish to change the image, movie, or sound, use this button to upload a new file. If you wish to edit the text attached to the item, use the "edit" button. To return to the main Backpack page, click "list all."
